In primary four or five or so, I was in my village Okpekpe in Etsako
East Local Government Area of Edo State. We had a Catechist
named (Odama) who came mainly thursdays or so, and will
assemble us under a mango tree at Otsele Primary School and
taught us Bible Knowledge as it was then called. He would ask me
to stand and define God, before now, he had taught us that God
was “The supreme spirit whom alone existed by himself and is
infinite in all perfections” One bad day for me, I said to him,
Catechist, who is the father of God? He said God had no father.
Who is the mother of God? He said God had no Mother? Who is
the brother of God? He said God had no brother nor sister, and I
said where is the village of God? By this time he couldn‟t take it
anymore and he shouted, common SIT DOWN, you are not the
only one here.
You know, it‟s so easy for us Pentecostals to condemn the
Catholics, some of us have concluded that HOLY MARY MOTHER
OF GOD is enough to take them off the road to heaven. That‟s the
only thing we often pick and capitalize on, but look, that‟s not the
only thing there, there are many things they do that draws the
heart of God that is not part of us as selfish Pentecostals. They
built the schools, dispensaries, recreations that so many of us
enjoyed for free.
